Ethnic-Specific Church Practicum (Calgary, 3 credits)  

September to December

A tailor-made, 3 month practicum in a Calgary ethnic-specific church family where participants will have opportunity to serve, learn and grow under the mentorship of an ethnic ministry leader.

 

Global Ministry Methods & Disciplines ( 3 credits)  

September 8-12, 2009

This course provides opportunity to evaluate and grow in your experience of walking with the Lord. It provides mutual encouragement that fosters devoted follower-ship. In particular it focuses on you as you prepare for cross-cultural ministry by presenting foundational material essential for growth, time for interaction and reflection, supervision and evaluation.

 

Urban Realities & Strategies (3 credits)  

September 21-25, 2009

Develop models of ministry suited to urban peoples, social structures and city systems.

 

Cross-Cultural Communication (3 credits)  

October 19-23, 26-30, 2009

Discover how to cross into another culture and communicate the gospel in a meaningful way.

 

Acts (3 credits)  

November 23-27, 2009

Adapt church planting principles of growth from the 1st century to the 21st century context.

 

Perspectives (3 credits)

Find out more about world missions and how you can be involved. A radical 14-week discipleship course taught by several ministry experts. Understand God’s global purposes from Genesis to Revelation.

 

Ethnography (3 credits)  

How DO they think? How do they see their world?  How can I learn to see the world as they see it? Learn techniques to write a study (an ethnography) based on face-to-face interaction with a group of people different from you. Using insights gained through ethnographic study, you will know better how to present the Gospel relevantly to the people with whom you are working.

 

Cross-Cultural Internship  (Overseas, 6 credits)  

A tailor-made, 3 month internship in an overseas cross-cultural setting where participants will have opportunity to serve, learn and grow under the mentorship of a missions’ leader.

Facilitator: Robert Magwood

MagsRob, more commonly know as “Mags”, graduated from Briercrest Bible College with an Associate of Arts Degree in Biblical Studies.  He also holds a Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Alberta and a certificate from Briercrest Biblical Seminary.

Mags and his wife, Kathleen, served in Ukraine for 6 years as church planters, and 1 year in Siberia were Mags was the Academic Dean/Instructor at Krasnoyarsk Bible College.  Upon returning to Canada he briefly directed the SEND Canada Mobilization Department and then assumed the role of Canadian Director in 2004.  Mags and Kathleen have three young children.

Course Description

This course focuses on understanding the importance and dynamics of cities with a view to preparing the student for effective urban ministry. Attention is on developing a Biblical basis for urban ministry. As well, contemporary strategies to urban evangelism and church planting in North America and around the world are a focus. Personal issues related to living and ministering in the city are discussed.

Facilitator: Stanley Dyer (D. Missions)

Stan DyerStanley Dyer started his life in ministry as a pastor during his college and seminary days. He than served as a Missionary in Japan with Overseas Missionary Society (OMS) from 1965 to 1990 in evangelism, church planting and Seminary teaching. He has been a Professor at both Tokyo Biblical Seminary and the Asian Graduate School of Theolgy. Stan also served as the Executive Director of OMS International – Canada from 1990 to 1999. He is currently the Executive Director Emeritus of OMS International-Canada.

Mr. Dyer has three married children and is a grandfather of six. Though officially retired, he remains active in global ministry from his home in Peterborough, Ontario.

He holds a BA, Philosophy of Religion from Greenville College, a MDiv. in Theology and a ThM (Pastoral Counseling) from Asbury Seminary and a D.Miss in Missiology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to explore the cultural, theoretical, and practical aspects of effective cross-cultural communication. Attention is given to the significance of acceptance of diverse cultures, values, ethnocentricity, verbal and non-verbal communication, and the dynamics of change. Participants will develop a personalized framework for effective cross-cultural communication.

Gord S

Gord Sawatzky holds a Diploma form Nipawin Bible Institute, a B.R.E. from Winnipeg Bible College , a M.A. from Providence Theological Seminary, and a D. of Missiology from Western Seminary (Portland)   He served as a missionary pilot-mechanic with Northern Canada Evangelical Mission (1980-1982).
 

Gord and his wife Carole have served with Africa Inland Mission a missionary pilot-mechanic in Kenya and Zaire (1982-1992), church planter, trainer, administrator in Zaire, Tanzania and Uganda (1992-2002) and trainer, pilot, mechanic, and administrator for south Sudan (2002-2007).

Course Description:

This course examines the foundation and development of the Early Church, which initiated a great missionary movement. We will develop a biblical theology of mission, which builds on the historical development of the Church in the book of Acts. This course addresses biblical themes such as redemption, prayer, proclamation, and the “all nations theme”. We will discover how the early church penetrated pagan culture and grew rapidly in a hostile world.

Facilitator: Gregg Bryce

Gregg_Bryce Gregg was born in Nigeria where his parents served with SIM.  He accepted the Saviour and began his commitment to the Lord as a young teen with an “all or nothing” experience.  Gregg obtained his Honors Degree in Physical Education and History at McMaster University. Following Bible College in New Brunswick, he served for six years as the youth pastor at The Peoples Church in Toronto.  During those years, he earned his MDiv at Ontario Theological Seminary (presently Tyndale) in Toronto. 

Gregg married Patti in 1986 and God has blessed them with four children: Stephen (1987), Tim (1989), Abigail (1992), and Ethan (2000) who, by the grace of God, have all come to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Patti is also a SIM MK from Nigeria.  

Gregg and Patti served in Bolivia for 12 years after spending one year in Costa Rica learning Spanish.  Their ministries involved church planting/nurturing, administration, mentoring, leadership training and sports outreach.
 
Gregg became Executive Director of SIM Canada in 2003 and has been committed to lead members and personnel through a number of important changes stemming from the Strategic Direction called “To 2010.”
